Maybe out of my natural passion for making stuff by hand

I always love to note down everything I have to do

At first, I only had daily spreads

Only wrote down to-do lists on that morning or night before

But then I found that lots of tasks could be planned ahead

That was when I developed my monthly and yearly spreads

Once I found a tag #BUJO

which has 3.1 million posts on Instagram

And I was stunned that this thing I had been doing

was exactly all these 3.1 million posts were showing

So, what is a BUJO? How to do a BUJO?

BUJO | What is BUJO

BUJO is short for Bullet Journal which literally means journal entries start with bullets -- dots/ squares/ stars.

The inventor of BUJO, Ryder Carroll, a Designer based in New York, thinks that Bullet Journal is meant “to help you track the past, organize the present, and plan for the future.”

BUJO is a system: apart from daily spreads, there are weekly, monthly, and yearly. But I think it very flexible. According to your own circumstances, you can plan all the spreads I've mentioned earlier at the beginning of a month. Or, you may just make your monthly spreads, filling in the big events you know ahead; then, plan the night before and fill in more the second day.

02 BUJO准备事项 | Before Starting a BUJO

It’s important to think about what you want a system to do for you before you dive in. -- Kim Alvarez

Personally, I employ BUJO firstly for better time management and multi-tasking (since I participate in school activities very actively apart from sometimes 9 hours of study a day). Secondly, I love how flexible the system is and how it gives me a "spark of joy" (Maire Kondo), making planning a very pleasant thing to do.

You can choose whatever pens and notebooks you like. Here I introduce four types of notebooks. Top left, squares, suitable for writing diaries and to-do lists. Top right, small dot grids, easier to draw and write (and super cute). Bottom left, blank, create as your mind takes you. Bottom right, big dot grids, easier for the structure of your artworks.

BUJO | How to do BUJO

I will provide a BUJO structure guide that I read on Tiny Ray of Sunshine website and tell you guys my thoughts on whether they are effective for your references.

First is the INDEX. I find it less useful because I don't bother to page my notebook and I have very flexible writing habits.

If you have similar situations but still find the INDEX necessary, I suggest using INDEX stickers.

Then it's Collections. Every entry can be called collections by definition according to the author. Under this category, there are Future Log (different months in a year), Monthly Log (different days in a month), Daily Log, and Personal Log.

Monthly Log

In the picture above, you will see dates on the left and tasks on the right. If you are a multi-tasker, I suggest making 2-page calendars (examples in the first picture or following pictures).

Daily Log

The following pictures are for your references. If you want to do a daily log at the beginning of a month, make sure you save enough space to fill out the tasks. But personally, I don't like planning everything 100% before the month even starts. The structure might appear great on the whole, but you may also waste paper and limit your growing creativity.

The third element is rapid-logging which comes from your familiarity with your symbols and the entries being brief. To rapidly log, you may use some of these symbols.

• Task - Precedes any Task you write down.

X Completed - Once you’ve completed a Task, mark it with a X

> Migrated - If you didn’t complete a Task, you Migrate it to another Collection.

< Scheduled - Tasks with specific dates in the future. These can be added to the Future Log.

But you don't have to use them all. If you find them not effective for you, you should find our own personal marks.

Practice is the most important after learning a lot about BUJO. July is here, come plan your watermelon July with me ;)
